Stinging Insects

Get-Rid-Of-Carpenter-Bees

This description of our services is also meant to educate. When the weather heats up, so does stinging insect activity. If you notice paper wasp, yellow jacket or hornet activity around or on your home, give us a call. Please understand that there is no way to eliminate flying insects from buzzing around your home. I get calls from people who say they have lots of bees and wasps in my bushes. This is nature taking it's course. I will not spray your bushes to eliminate them, they will leave when the flowers are done blooming and they are done pollinating. If you determine a safety issue to pets or people, we will treat the nest or the area that they are entering your structure. The treatment will also include a return trip to remove the nest, usually within a day or two. We take this approach to ensure that all of the insects come back to the nest and come in contact with the material used to treat. Removing the nest immediately after treatment results in the insects that were out foraging are still alive and won't be happy when they find their home has been removed.

Bald faced hornets create a circular nest (starting small and at times growing to soccer ball size) usually in trees, bushes, or eaves and soffits on your home. I will be honest, I do not like to kill bald faced hornets unless absolutely necessary. If the nest is low to the ground in a tree, bush, shed or in an area that is used by people or pets, it can be a safety issue and should be eliminated. They are beneficial insects, consuming other pests including ground-nesting yellow jackets.

Entomologists have observed the inside of the baldfaced hornet nests are sometimes yellow as they are filled with the remains of the ground-nesting yellow jackets. Baldfaced hornets also act as pollinators. I have found them to be non aggressive if left alone. If you find a nest high on your home under the roof peak or eaves and it is out of the way of windows that are open at times, you can leave it. If you find one high in a tree by your home that will not be disturbed by landscaping or mowing activity, leave it. The hornets will vacate the nest when the weather turns cooler and you can remove it yourself, saving yourself money and allowing nature to take its course.

Hornets and wasps do not return to the nest the next year, it is used only one season. Every year they create a new nest. If you need a hornet nest removed for safety issues, give us a call.

Ground nesting yellow jackets are aggressive and can be a problem for children and pets and should be eliminated. They can also be found going under siding and making a nest in a wall void in your home. Give us a call to have them treated. Please note that we do not spray for carpenter bees.
